With the recent legalisation of same sex/gay marriage in America, makes me wonder if African leaders can look beyond culture and religion and follows the law of equality by legalising gay marriage
Gayism is the act of feeling attraction towards same gender, like Homosexuals, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender etc
African culture is diverse, mix of tribes with unique culture and language. Culture is the ways of life and beliefs of the people and our culture is as old as the people's existence.
In Nigeria, we are blessed with multiple ethnic groups, as much as 521 languages and 250 dialects and ethnic. We have 3 major tribes, Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba.
Our values as African is our culture and we must preserve it. Even though, we are losing it gradually to western culture or civilisation but we can still quick to saying "Gayism isn't our culture" not minding our rights as individuals.
On the other hand, Religion is something most of us have in common as human. Our curiosity for the purpose of life, life as human, life after death, the origin of the universe and the existence of God. We have 20 kinds of religion among other beliefs.
The holy book of the Muslims, Quran says
"Do you,of all peoples, approach males,... and leave your wives whom your lord has created for you? Nay, you are a people who transgress... If thou desist not, O lot, thou will surely be one of the banished ones...Allah said certainly I hate your practice" 026:166-169
A muslim is one who submits himself to Allah, so anyone into the act of Gayism is one who submits his himself to his desires.
However, there have been lots of debates about the causes of this practice. Are environmental factors responsible for it or should it be seen as a mental disorder?
A widely publicised study in 1999, stated that a part of the hypothalamus in gays are smaller than the usual. Hypothalamus is that part of the brain that directs a multiple function in the body. whether or not it is present at birth or during lifetime isn't known.
Life they say is a mystery and we will never have 100% percent knowledge about all that revolves around it. If this is a mental disorder, can we hold them guilty for they don't have control over? Is the 14years jail term for people caught practising this act in Nigeria justified?
Gayism isn't a new behaviour, it has been in existence, practically all culture among people in secrecy.
The world we live in today has changed, we are in the era of western societies, so we need to deal with it and not play "God"
